During this podcast we cover the interesting (and perhaps strange) subject of what is commonly referred to as 'The Evil Eye'. The concept exists in many cultures throughout the World and in particular in Arab society. In a nutshell, it is 'a belief that the envy elicited by the good luck of fortunate people may result in their misfortune'. Be sure to lend an ear to this lesson for all your Arabic jargon and a deeper insight into the matter at hand.

A fascinating lesson, especially the story about the eye. I had heard of it before but it is useful to learn more about it while also learning new vocabulary and phrases.
Thanks for your continued valuable supply of learning material! grin

This is another great lesson and you guys are as good as always grin. Shukran!

At this occasion: In a blog, found the concept of a person or an institution having "wahra" (strong and influential presence that commands respect). Could this, and similar concepts, be the topic of a future lesson?

By the way, how would I spell "wahra" in Arabic? oh oh

Thanks again for your excellent learning material.

Hi Bianca

I couldn't find anything in the dictionary and then googled your phrase and found

.."In Lebanon, we invented the world wahra, (Strong and influential presence that commands respect)"..

I'm guessing it's a Lebanese only word, not ÇáÝÕÍì

this was a really good one...especially culturally....i lived all my childhood in the gulf(dubai.oh how much i miss thst place!!) and never knew about it....its strange, because here in india to we have something like that(i mean the evil eye)..i never really new what it meant because i belong to the christian faith....(my friends used to say:dont look at this or that like that, teasing me)...even some people put a big black spot on their babys face so that they dont get the evil eye...might be due to this reason.YOU GUYS ROCK!!

I was surprised to hear from people I met there that magical belief persists so strongly, especially in Egypt and Morocco. In Tunisia there was a sister-in-law of the friend I stayed with that was suspected of buying 'spells' to add to her wayward husband's food to keep him. The popular view there that cancer can also be a side effect of this.
